<전시> Bill Viola의 "Ocean Without a Shore"를 보고

Ocean Without a Shore /  해변 없는 바다

Ocean Without a Shore is about the presence of the dead in our lives. The three stone altars in the church of San Gallo become portals for the passage of the dead to and from our world. Presented as a series of encounters at the intersection between life and death, the video sequence documents a succession of individuals slowly approaching out of darkness and moving into the light. Each person must then breakthrough an invisible threshold of water and light in order to pass into the physical world. once incarnate however, all beings realize that their presence is finite and so they must eventually turn away from material existence to return from where they came. The cycle repeats without end.

The work was inspired by a poem by the 20th century Senegalese poet and storyteller Birago Diop:

“ Hearing things more than beings,
listening to the voice of fire,
the voice of water.
Hearing in wind the weeping bushes,
sighs of our forefathers.

The dead are never gone:
they are in the shadows.
The dead are not in earth:
they’re in the rustling tree,
the groaning wood,
water that runs,
water that sleeps;
they’re in the hut, in the crowd,
the dead are not dead.

The dead are never gone,
they’re in the breast of a woman,
they’re in the crying of a child,
in the flaming torch.
The dead are not in the earth:
they’re in the dying fire,
the weeping grasses,
whimpering rocks,
they’re in the forest, they’re in the house,
the dead are not dead.”

오래 전 새해 첫날,

백남준의 비디오를 처음 접했을 때의 충격을 잊지 못한다.

이번에 빌 비올라의 영상을 보면서, 백남준 때의 충격만큼은 아니지만,

깜깜한 전시실의 영상을 통해

인간의 삶과 죽음 사이를 오가는 듯한 환각에 빠지는 강렬한 인상을 받았다.

 

<해변 없는 바다 / Ocean Without a Shore >라는 작품이었는데

전시실 세 면의 벽에 설치된 스크린에 나타난 인물과

그들 위에 쏟아지는 폭포수 같은 물줄기.

그 물이 만들어 내는 물방울은 빛으로 인해

잘게 부서진 유리파편 같기도 하고 보석같기도 하다.

 

각각의 화면에는 다른 인물들이 아주 느린 속도로

앞으로 걸어나오기도 하고 왔던 곳으로 뒤돌아 가기도 한다.

그들의 표정은 하나같이 굳어있거나  마치 죽어있는 사람의 그것 같다.

 

작가가 말하고자 했던 건 무엇일까.

궁금한 나머지 검색을 통해 빌 비올라 홈페이지를 방문했다.

 '우리 삶에서의 존재와 죽음에 대해' 표현했다는 노트를 보니

고개가 끄덕여진다.

국립현대미술관의 작품안내 글 중

'이 존재들은 궁극적으로 유한한 존재에서 벗어나

원래 있던 無의 세계로 돌아간다'는 메모를 보니

작품에 대한 공감이 더욱 깊어진다.

Birago Diop의 시에서 영감을 얻어 이뤄진 작품이라고 하니,

명작이 또다른 명작을 낳은 셈이다.
